The thought on transfOrmation of national character is one of the mainthoughts in the period of New Cu1tuxe Movement. Chen Tu-hsiu's thoughtson this topic are more rePreseniative. This article mainly deals with Chen'sthoughs about analysis of Chinese national character and the obect andaPproaches of national character transformation and the features of Chen'sthOughs in ths period. Chen criticized the s1avish, ignorat, conservativeand other wicked tYaits of citizens, among Which weak resistance was thebiggest vile. And the main cause of this national character was traditionalChinese culfore, especially Confucianism. To mould the ideal citizens,Chen emphasized individualism and the sPirit of science. He constructedprogressive objects from cultivation of citizens' essential attriblltes, topolitical realization and then to ethical realization. The aPproaches to theaim were ethical revolution, literary revolution, nationality education andpioneering youth as pacesetters. The main characteristics of Chen'sthoughts are the strong sense of object strata, modem concePt of culturecomPallson, ad vocation of pure individualisms. The significance of itconsists in enlightening people and reconstructing Chinese philosophy oflife in the period of socially shifting and disorganization of the traditionalvalue system.
