After the completion of Shuowen, due to copying through many hands through hundreds of years and revision of Li Yangbing in the Tang dynasty, it had many mistakes and omission and lost its true features. Later, Xu Xuaiu Gou Zhongzheng etc rectified it under the emperor's order. They tried hard to restore its true features and made great achievement. But the omission and mistakes made through copies during the successive dynasties were so great that they couldn't be all corrected by Xu Xuan etc. And there must have been something that were contrary to the original of Shuowen. Later many great masters of Shuowen collated it. They expounded and proved their views from various angles and drew valuable conclusion and made indelible contribution to the restoration of Shuowen. But there must existed some deficiencies.Huilinyinyi was written by Huilin, a monk in the Tang Dynasty. He annotated some Buddhist sutras with his solid foundation in language and characters and Shuowen was one of the books which he took for his grounds. He quoted Shuowen in most entries of his nook and many entries of Shuowen was quoted again and again. The position of Shuowen in Huilinyinyi is thus evident. It is valuable that so many materials can be used to correct Shuowen. However it is a pity that most scholars who studied Shuowen in the Qing Dynasty didn't use the rich materials. So the author of this article have found out all the entries in Shuowen that were quoted in HuilinyinyL But due to the limitation of the space and time, after the author had read over all the entries, the characters in part Xin etc, altogether nine parts, were taken out as object of study, and are compared and proved with the present version of Shuowen and are expected to make up the deficiency of Shuowen. This article is composed of three parts. The first part, introduction. Introducing Huilinyinyi and its author, the purport of the book and the present condition of the studying of it. The second part,: the comparison between Shuowen quoted in Huilinyinyi and that of the two Xu's. The detailed comparison was made mainly in the content. There are mainly four conditions: that are completely the same, that are basically the same, that are different in content and that having some doubts. During the course of comparison, the author made analysis along with the examples referring to relevant characters quoted in other books, to prove the correctness or to correct the mistakes of the two Xu's, or to prove that there were mistakes in the quotation of Huilinyinyi or to correct the errors made by Duan Yucau Shen tao Ding Fubao etc. The third part, conclusion. After the above analysis, the author have drawn a conclusion as following: the completely same and the basically same words add up to more than a half, thus it proves that the two Xu's are believable to a certain extent; the value of the different words: the two Xu's, Huilinyinyi and the many schools of Shuowen prove and make up for one another.
