The Exegesis Guopu Study

The period of WEI JIN was the most confusionous and turbulent in history. In this period political power stood facing each other between North and South and thought of science also appeared different fashions. The South laid stress on meaning and significance,but the North attached importance to things and their names. Textology developed and advanced consistently in this stage. The thesis uses GuoPu' s annotation of ancient books as the target of studying and makes a thorough study of GuoPu' s characters of scholium.The thesis contists of five parts.Part One:The Reduction Of All GuoPu' s Life And The Book Annotated ByHimGuoPu was a person of literary talent of WEI JIN. He had both wide learning and a retentive memory. His interests were widespread and his cultural heritage which he left behind for later generations was rich. He not only created large number works of poem and rhyme prose,but also sorted out and annotated Fang Yan, Er Ya, Shan Hal Jing and Mu Jian Zi Zhuan.He didn' t have blind faith in forefathers. He made a breakthrough and his explanations of words in ancient books were worth discussing.Part Two: GuoPu' s Style Of Textual ExegesisThis section discusses GuoPu' s style of textual exegesis from four aspects. The first, the thesis mainly analyzes GuoPu' s understanding about complex phenomenon of applying words in classical works. The second, the thesis illustrates style of phonetic notation. The third, the thesis shows style of explaining the meaning of words. The forth, the thesis discusses style of leaving a question open. He used WEIXIANG,WEIWEN to leave a matter for future consideration when he met things which he didn't understand.Part Three: GuoPu' s Methods Of Textual ExegesisThe thesis classifies the methods of scholium into two parts, methods of seeking meanings and methods of explaining meanings. Meathods of seeking meanings which GuoPu utilized are exploring meanings from form of words,pursuing meanings from pronunciation of words, inquiring meanings from meanings and searching meanings from context and so on. Methods of explaining meanings which GuoPu made use of included establishing definition, describing image, comparing things and giving examples.Part Four: GuoPu' s Technical Terms Of Textual ExegesisThe thesis discusses GuoPu' s technical terms of scholium from three aspects: technicality of phonetic notation,technicality of explaining the meanings of words, technicality of collating. GuoPu not only inherited some technical words of forefathers, such as DU YUE, DU RUO, TUO WEN and so on, but also created some new technical words ,such as JIA YIN, JIA JIE YIN and so on.Part Five: GuoPu' s Ideology Of Textual ExegesisFirst, the thesis analyzes GuoPu' s understanding about relationship between pronunciation and meaning. He could breach fetter which come from form of written language and link up meaning of words from articulation. Secondary, he noticed development and change of sense of words,also found extending of meaning of words. Lastly, he paid attention to proving old terms with modern terms and this is his consistant vigour.Part Six:Conclusion...
