This paper consists of two chapters:In chapter one we make a textual research of the Records of the Historian and Intrigues of the Warring States. We first define the edition of the two books and the standard based on which Sima Qian excerpted articles from Intrigues of the Warring States. Then we do statistical work to exemplify this. According to our statistics, there are 96 articles excerpted in the Records of the Historian from Intrigues of the Warring States. The details are shown in a form,Chapter Two is a comparative study of the Records of the historian and Intrigues of the Warring States. We analyze how and why Sima Qian excerpted and elaborated articles from Intrigues of the Warring States. This chapter is made of three parts.Part I is a summary of the basic principles and main methods based on which Sima Qian excerpted and elaborated the articles from Intrigues of the Warring States.Part II analyses how and why Sima Qian excerpted and elaborated the articles from Intrigues of the Warring States. We find that Sima Qian抯 憄rinciple of creating a philosophy of his own?runs through his work. The Basic Annals and The Aristocratic Families focus on the important historical events, such as the rise and fall of the states. The Collected Biographies is about the life and philosophy of many distinguished people. In addition, Sima Qian抯 aesthetic standards of being unique also influenced his option of materials in his book.Part III discusses how the Records of the Historian inherit and elaborate the writing style and techniques such as narration from Intrigues of the Warring States.
