The ci leballed as "the literary genre of an epoch" which experiencedan embryo stage of composing the new tunes and expanding its forms in theNorth Song Period (960膌127A.D.), came into a full and colorful blossomduring the South Song Period (1127膌279A.D.), among which Mengchuang ci,like a graceful rare flower ,bloomed and faded of itself. Since thenhowever, the Eight hundled years or more has witnessed an great ebb and flowin the evaluation of his ci, and up to now, the studies of Mengchuang cihaven't come to an accord yet.Based on the historical position and present studying condition ofMengchuang ci, some multi膌ayered analyses have been undertaken in thefollowing three aspects in an attempt to abtain a systenBtic andcomprehensive understanding of the outstanding and unique ci writer of theSouth Song Period.Section One. Mengchuang's conment on ci and Its Artistic featuresWu Mengchuang, as a backbone of the elegance group of the ci writersin the South Song Period, failed to share the same path with Jiang Baishi.People mostly know Mengchuang for his ci rather than his "elegance andexquisiteness" theory of ci腸reation. A combined study of both his ci andhis coninents on ci can reveal a mutual demonstration and complement betweenhis artistic feature of ci and his ci腸reating theory of "elegance andexquisiteness".I.Mengchuang's Elegance Coninent on ciWhen the patriotic group of ci headed by Xin Qiji descended from thestage of ci in the South Song Period, the elegance group , headed by .JiangBaishi and Wu Mengchuang , who were of the greatest originality and influence, began to be highlighted. The reason why the group characters basiclly in"elegance" lies in the couinon point the members of the group, with an initialattempt to correct the errors of a minor group of ci writers represented6by Xin, drove to be elegant in the creation of ci by seeking rhythmic harmony, exquisite choice of words and rejection of vulgarness from elegance, andso did Wu Mengchuang in his ci creation. The representative works on ei腸reating theory of the elegance groupin the South Song Period are "A Guide to Yuefu" and "The Oringin of ci",both of which, unfortunately, emerged too late. Some of Mengchuang'sconI~ents on ci create was neglected owing to it's being handed down frommouth to ear and to it's over腷riefness, but his four criterid of theci腸reating theory, which reveals briefly the creating tendency andartistic feature of the elegance group as well as its accuracy and timeliness, can never be veiled.II.The Artistic Feature of Mengchuang CiThe establishment of the Secure position of Mengchuang olin historyowes n~inly to its unique artistic feature, which can be mutuallycomplemented and demonstrated with Mengchuang's co~rment on el腸reation, hamely, the denseness, earnestness, excellence and profoundness in style, the colorfulness, condenseness, rr~gnificence and implicativeness inwording; compactness, complicatedness. uneonstrainedness andharm膐niousness in structure; and the treasure膁ecorating monsion and thedreamy window in rain as symbols of beauty, etc. Hence, an exhanstive conmenthas been give in this chapter on such artistic features of Mengchuang Ci,most of which come in terms with Mengchuang's "elegance" ci theory, and someof which also stand out of the fixed rules.Part Two. The Theme and Content of Mengehuang ci.In consideration of the impropriety of the non膄ocus studies ofMengchuang ci by the former scholars with juxtaposed cozmients on his sceneci, love ci and fate膕ighing ci, etc, a comprehensive generalization anda careful reobservation have been conducted on the studies of Mengchuangci from the two aspects of theme and content respectively, so that we couldget rid of the im...
