Novels with the theme of public security are like exotic flowers in our contemporary field of novel creation. They shine in the literary world and are popular with more and more readers. As part of the literature of public security, novels with the theme of public security depict how the police practice and create beauty, and protect the true, the good and the beautiful while resisting the false, the bad and the ugly. Encouraging justice, kind-heartedness, wisdom and nobility, these novels work up readers' lofty sentiments and spirit of righteousness, and thus they are popular in China and get a widespread concern.Up to now, novels with the theme of public security have developed greatly. However, few of them shine in the art history. What is more, they are not paid enough attention to and are even ignored. Analysis of these novels mainly focuses on the aspects of politics and sociology. There is no ideological concern or aesthetic interpretation. The authoress here, having carefully read certain novels and gathered materials on a wide scale, aims to make a macro study of these novels and a deep exploration of their achievements and shortcomings. The thesis talks about the development, theme, artistic feature, shortcoming and aesthetic pursuit of these novels of the new period (ever since the reform and opening-up), and can be divided into four parts. Part 1 defines the connotation of novels with the theme of public security in the new period, and analyzes its origin, as well as development which has gone through three stages: the revival period (from late 1970s to mid 1980s), the prosperous period (from mid 1980s to early 1990s), and the rational development period (from early 1990s to the 21st century). Part 2 discusses the subject matter from the following three different angles: praising heroism and pursuing nobility, encouraging justice and punishing the evil while praising the good, caring about the society and reflecting reality. Part 3 is about the artistic features of these novels: vivid characters, fantastic plots and great suspense. Part 4 confirms the realistic value of these novels in the new period, points out their shortcomings and discusses their aesthetic pursuit from the aspects of publicizing humanity and suiting both refined and general tastes, and meanwhile puts forward approaches for the further development of such novels.The present thesis studies novels with the theme of public security in the long history of its development and the developing process of the work of public security. It sorts out the origin and development of novels with the theme of public security and makes a comprehensive study, points out some problems in the current academic studies and the bright prospect of the creation of such novels. The authoress, by writing the present thesis, aims to improve the educational level and public image of the police, to provide a way to standardize their law enforcement, mould their awareness of theory study, and at the same time to make leaders of public security offices pay attention to the development of novels with the theme of public security. What is more, the thesis can improve readers' aesthetic taste, and provide reference for writers to create better works.
