Xiong Philosophical Study

To begin with the theory's background and thought origin, the article logically reveals the structure of Xiong shili's philosophy system. The main content of Xiong shili's philosophy is unity of substance and function, closing and opening produce change, and knowing oneself. Among the New Confucians, Xiong shili is the first man to pursue metaphysics, and his philosophy settled the metaphysical basis for the New Confucianism. The outstanding contribution of Xiong's philosophy is to make substance to solve the problem of Chinese philosophy modernization. Xiong pointed out that the way of seeking substance is the basic way for modern man conducting oneself in society. Xiong reconstructed the traditional Confucian's Mind and Xing theory by the modern philosophy way, and opened a thinking way for traditional philosophy to modernization. His philosophy emphasized that Original Mind, Humanity and Universal Life are the basis. Thus, it raised the subject high and found the philosophy basis for people's self-respect, self-confidence and self- possession. Xiong's also initiates the effective approach to solve the sense crisis. His theory has limitation, but it also has great meaning and modern value. The article includes three parts: Part one introduces the background and thought origin of Xiong's theory. Part two discusses the structure of unity of substance and function in detail. Unity of substance and function is the ontological content; the theory that closing and opening produce change explains the universal view; knowing oneself and positivism express the Mind and Xing theory. Part three analyzes the modern value and meaning.
