| In modern times, the western enlightened rationalism influenced the traditional thinking and the way of thinking in China. To surmount valuable crisis because of technological rationalism, modern new Confucianists studied religion, philosophy, science, morality, social development and subsistence of individual.This dissertation selected religion as a monographic study leading into Chinese philosophy. The representative characters of early modern new Confucianism (before 1949) had their attitudes to religion. Liang Shuming began with the visual angle of cultural philosophy and put forward "morality will take place of religion"; Xiong Shili began with his ontology and opposed to looking for noumenon without phenomenon. He held that God in the Christianity didn't have practical worth and put forward "presence be"; Feng Youlan negated religion, especially Christianity, and predicted "philosophy will take place of religion"; He Lin affirmed "religion is the nature of morality; morality is the manifestation of religion."In a word, early modern new Confucianists' religious thinking related to culture, philosophy, ethics and politics in the intrinsic and exceeding way. |
