Nyaya Sutra "argument To The Intrinsic Characteristics Of The Doctrine

This paper is to inquire into the main characteristics on the concept of debate in Nyayasutra. By comparing the earlier discussion concerning the forms of debate in eighth chapter of Caraka Samhitita with the correlative discussion in Nyayasutra, with the help of their commentaries, the paper elaborates on the process of historical evolution of concepts of vada, jalpa and vitanda according to the original text. In fact, that observation reveals the collision and tension aroused from the distinction between vada and jalpa, which are regarded as didactical and sophistical forms of debate in early Nyaya. In the last part, under the-aboded investigation, the paper argues that jati as one of sub-type to jalpa can be reduced into two schemes viz. sophistic jati and fallacious jati.
