Newcastle is an important coal industry city of UK. It also is the Britain's largest coal port. From middle ages to modern times, it had been Britain's important exporter of coal. From the fifteenth century, the coal produced from here had be well known in Europe, be called 'seacoal'. In the Middle Ages, Newcastle transformed from a military castle into a coal mining city. Although at that time, the coal production is still quite a few. But this change is essential for Newcastle. Because it determines the direction of future development in this city. And also laid the foundation for Newcastle in the future status of the United Kingdom. From the sixteenth century, the development of Newcastle had been closely related to the coal.This paper Discusses the development of Newcastle coal industry and trade from the 16th century to early 20th century, the coal demands from the transformation of early modern England and the development of "large-scale industry" before the Industrial Revolution, and describes the characteristics of Newcastle coal industry and trade in each period. But more importantly, Modern machines were widely used in Newcastle's coal production and cause a number of series production and organizational changes. This was very important to Newcastle. From the 19th century, Newcastle became an comprehensive industrial city. And the busy coal trade has also led to the development of Newcastle port industry. To the end of the 19th century, Newcastle had became an important English port.The development of industry and trade made the city scale have been expanding unceasingly. The population continues to increase. Urban social service function also subsequently continuous improvements. All of this makes Newcastle develop toward a modern city. Today, Newcastle has become the largest industrial and commercial city in Northeast England.
