Dwelling Narrowness, a hit serial adapted from a novel of the same name by Liuliu, has become a hot topic of discussion in many news papers and websites since it was on TV in 2009. The novel, the serial, the comments on both, all are "textualization of History", to borrow the phrase invented by Fredric Jameson in The Political Unconscious. This thesis attempts to explore the link among the texts, and the link between the texts and reality, in which those texts are produced. Why has the serial Dwelling Narrowness caused so much attention in mass media and web communities? A ready answer is that, the price of real estate is most concerned in cities. However, the deeper reason is its projection of their "Chinese dream" To have a home in a big city, especially in a super-city like Shanghai or Peking, is part of many young people's "Chinese dream". For white collar like "Haiping" the female protagonist in Dwelling Narrowness, "Chinese dream" is a dream of urbanization."Chinese dream" means hope and confidence in the future, whereas Dwelling Narrowness represents the hardness of life for white collar; "Chinese dream" promises fair competition, whereas Dwelling Narrowness exposes the unfairness of reality. In a sense Dwelling Narrowness projects doubt on "Chinese dream". But, it does not deny hope. Instead, Dwelling Narrowness textualizes complex emotions. The feeling it conveys is a mixture of distress, upset, despair and hope. And it is a kind of collective feeling among ordinary white collar, or their "structure of feeling".
