When we're enjoying beautiful works, shadow foil allows us to focus on the bright part. Photographers use shadow to capture moments of wonderfulness, making the whole picture have primary and second distinct and stronger appeal; Artists use shadow to brew emotion, making the object idealized. The dazzling glory and mysterious dark style can both make the figures vague. Light and dark have their intrinsic value. Light is not only an indispensable part in painting, but also can make the presented objects seen by eyes. Perspective can make use of tools to describe, but chiaroscuro in painting cannot use any stage properties to construct. So we have to admire the special effects and artistic appeal of Chiaroscuro. Chiaroscuro has a long history. It was created in the renaissance period and developed and finally got its high position in the 17th century. In the course of the historical reincarnation, the explore of Chiaroscuro in western painting took dramatic turns with cross and continuation, leaving a great impact to future generationsThis paper tries to make an in-depth exploration on three important innovative practitioners, Caravaggio, Rembrandt and Vermeer in this period of western painting circle. With their techniques of Chiaroscuro as a starting point, this paper focuses on innovative problems in the development of shadow. These three painters are all great artists in the 17th century with many similarities in painting. This paper uses chiaroscuro as the clue and makes a progressive analysis by comparing the differences of these three painters in painting features, forms of light and shadow and painting language. Finally, based on the above analysis, the paper summarizes the differences and similarities of these three painters in the use of Chiaroscuro. This paper mainly uses the methods of analogy inference, analysis synthesis, inductive construct, abstract and summarized method, and experience summary method to carry out the argument. This paper is mainly divided into three parts. Firstly, through understanding the concept of chiaroscuro, this paper makes an analysis of these three painters'use of chiaroscuro. Secondly, it makes a comprehensive analysis of the three painters'drawing style to help us have a better understanding of them.
