Online education, with the rapid development of computer network and the educational technology, has become the trend of education innovation, and shows its advantages in the field of education. Web-based courses are an important part of online education, and the thoughts, the methods in the teaching-learning process and the models of distance learning have direct impacts on the quality of the courses. As the production base for distance education resources, the cyber education colleges'major work is to design and develop web-based courses. At present, much emphasis is laid on folded-up menu, animation, interactive technology, database management, while the teaching-learning theories that the instructional design of the web-based course should base on are neglected. Development of many online courses ignores the guidance of the education theory, lacks the systematic design of instruction. This thesis intends to provide some basic theory of the instructional design of English web-based course, and take further research on it.In this paper the author first outlines the research about the instructional design of English web-based course home and abroad, and then describes the definition of these related concepts, drawing on data through an interview of a teacher and questionnaires with a sample of 49 subjects in the courses. From all these research, one can summarize the problems of English web-based courses. In the thesis the basic theories on the instructional design of English web-based course are listed, and some suggestions are given to improve the design, in the hope that it can make contributions to the development of English web-based courses.
