Nie Gannu is a famous modern Chinese writer who was tireless and prolific in literary creation throughout his life. His works include essay, poem, fiction, prose, and play, and his accomplishments mainly lie in his study of classical literature and Chinese language and characters. He was known for his essays in his early literary career, and astonished the literary world again at an older age with his peculiar ancient-style poetry. Nie Gannu's extraordinary literary achievement owes heavily to Lu Xun. This thesis attempts to prove that Nie Gannu was a follower of Lu Xun by studying Nie's learning, inheritance and development of Lu Xun's literary creation in his most significant literary creations: essay, poetry and fiction. In essay writing, Nie Gannu learned Lu Xun's analysis methods, including rational social analysis and bold self-analysis, and writing techniques, such as sharp criticism and"tearful"humor; he inherited Lu Xun's complete anti-feudal thoughts, unyielding"tenacious fighting"spirit, concerns over reality and revelation of corruption of the old society and strict created attitude. Nie wrote many essays on issues that were covered( included) in Lu Xun's writings, such as anti-feudalism, women and anti-imperialism.In poetry, the main feature of Nie Gannu's innovative ancient-style poems is"combining poetry with essays", which was a form of his further study of Lu Xun's essays. Humorous and attractive"Nie Gannu Style"poems are closely connected to Nie's study of Lu Xun's doggerel ancient-style poems. In fiction, Nie Gannu's monologue-style local novels are very similar to Lu Xun's local novels. With strong local colors and rustic flavors, Lu Xun's local novels usually adopt realistic techniques and memories to show the rural life and reality and expose darkness of the old society, to which Nie Gannu paid great attention in his study. Nie was good at using skillful plot design in his local novels to deepen the themes, and he put his army memories into some of his works to build a special style. In his historical novel writing, Nie Gannu studied the essayistic realistic exposition and criticism in Lu Xun's historical novels, inherited Lu Xun's"slippery"skill, and managed to use both maturely and accurately. Besides, Nie also referred to the lyric characteristic of Zheng Zhenduo's historical novels, which he digested and grasped to create his own specialties.Adopting analogical argument method, this thesis explores Nie Gannu's learning, inheritance and development of Lu Xun's literary creation by making comparisons to find out the similarities between Nie Gannu and Lu Xun in their essays, poems and novels, and reaches the conclusion that Nie Gannu was a follower of Lu Xun.
