Poetics And Politics: A Research On Nie Gannu's Thought And Creation

Nie Gannu is an important and significant writer in Chinese Contemporary Literature and Culture History. His life has experienced ups and downs, he joined the KMT in his early life, and then he participated in the Communist Party. He is both a Yellow Bu military school student and a positive advocator of "the League of Leftist Writers". He wrote essay, edited paper, commented on the classical literature and wrote novels, gaining outstanding achievements in Chinese Contemporary Literature History. His essays in the 1930s and '40s were articulated in the style of Lu Xun essays, known as the first successor of the "Lu Xun Style". Later, he changed into writing traditional poems and thus formed "Nie style". His creative writings adhere tightly to reality, especially his essay writings. But his disposition is "Kuangjuan", "straightforwardness", "indifference" and herein lays a contradiction which gives an interesting starting point to understand Nie Gannu's characteristics. His importance is both reflecting in his creation and for his unique experience, spiritual individuality and his creation in the course of Chinese modernization. This article tries to delve into how did Nie Gannu establish his mature literary views and social ideas? How did a status of intergrowth between traditional and modern culture and knowledge system find expression in him? How did he spread his aspiration in his essays and traditional poems?This essay falls into four chapters. The first chapter passes:by means of the following the aspects----Jichu culture's influence on Nie Gannu's creation thinking, traditional culture's cultivation on Nie Gannu's thought and character and its influence on the manner of speech and narration, this chapter validates the potential impact on Nie Gannu's spiritual personality and narrative way given by the spirit of traditional Chinese culture.Chapter two restores all Nie Gannu's lifelong literary view, figuring out how does his creation idea come into being, develops and finally establishes an influential current through exploring the relationship between Nie Gannu himself and new literature circle and periodicals into consideration. Chapter three discusses the relationship between Nie Gannu essay's individuality and the age, by pondering upon Nie Gannu essay's content and character, inspecting how his essay carries on the "Lu Xun Style" in the content and rhetoric, and analyzes the dialectical relations between his essay and politics in detail.By means of explaining concrete rhetorical device, citing allusion and imagery, Chapter four illustrates Nie Gannu's striving for combing meter and colloquial, digging and revealing the meaningful narration, which is concealed in the representation of his traditional poems, to pry into author's creative thinking and mind.
