Purpose: To observe the clinical efficacy of laser photocoagulation combined with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) on diabetic retinopathy (promoting blood circulation and remove blood stasis, supplementing qi and nourishing yin and to facilitate the water). Methods: 50 cases (78 eyes) diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy were enrolled in our study, including out-patients and hospitalized patients in the Ophthalmology Department of Jilin Province Chinese Medicine Hospital (Affiliated Hospital to Changchun University of Chinese Medicine) from January 2008 to February 2010. Binocular diabetic retinopathy of 29 patients and monocular 21 patients were qualified as eligible. All the patients were randomly assigned to treatment group and control group respectively. In treatment group, 25 cases (40 eyes) were applied with laser coagulation combined with TCM. In the control group, 25 cases (38 eyes) were admitted only laser treatment, the comparison of clinical efficacy was analyzed. Patients were undergone a comprehensive eye examination, baseline characteristics included visual acuity, fundus and fluorescence angiography change. The patients were observed at fifteen and thirty days pre-and post- treatment. To evaluate the effect of therapy, and make the corresponding conclusions. Results: (1) Absorption rate of retinal hemorrhage and exudation and micro-aneurysms was 92.5% in treatment group and 90.0% in control group respectively. Two groups was statistically significant (P <0.05) (2) The disappearance efficiency of macular edema was 94.1% in treatment group and 71.4% in control group one month post-treatment. Two groups was statistically significant (P <0.05). (3) The efficiency of visual acuity improvement in treatment group was 82.5% comparing 52.8% in control group, two groups was statistically significant (P <0.05).Conclusion: Laser treatment combined with TCM had a significant beneficial effect than the control group. Apparent reduction of retinal hemorrhage and exudation was observed one month post-treatment in treatment group. One month after therapy, macular edema, micro-aneurysms and visual acuity was improved significantly than the control group, indicating TCM treatment with laser coagulation on diabetic retinopathy is a beneficial therapy .
