Integrative Medicine A Systematic Review Of Stroke Unit Treatment Of Acute Stroke Patients

Purpose:To assess the clinical efficacy of Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Stroke Unit in the treatment of Cerebral Stroke at Acute Period.Methods:Randomized or quasi-randomized controlled trials(RCTs or quasi-RCTs) were identified from CBM(1978～2009),CNKI(1994～2009),VIP(1989～2009),PubMed(1966～2009),Cochrane Library(Issue6,2009).We also hand searched relevant journals from Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.Data were extracted and evaluated by two reviewers independently with a designed extraction form.RevMan 4.2.2 software was used for data analysis.Results:A total of 16 trials involving 2858 patients were included. Meta-analyses showed that Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Stroke Unit group was superior to general medicine treatment group in clinical total effective rate,dead rate 1 month after stroke,NIHSS,OHS and BI score when leaving hospital,WHOQOL-100,MBI,FMA,BBS score after treatment,BI 1 month after treatmen,NDS score 3weeks aftertreatment(P<0.05);while it was superior to western medicine SU in NIHSS score 1 week,1 month and 3 months after stroke,OHS scores 1 month and 3 months after stroke and other indexes(P<0.05).Conclusion:With relatively poor quality and small sample size included trials,insufficient evidence is obtained to support the conclusion that Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Stroke Unit is not inferior to western medicine SU,and superior to General medicine treatment.Further large-scale high quality trials are required to define the role of Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Stroke Unit in the treatment of Cerebral Stroke at Acute Period.
