There are 112 (113) formulas in the book Treatise on Febrile Diseases (shanghanlun), in which every formula is corresponding to its main disease and syndrome. As to the treatment of main disease and syndrome, ZhangZhongjing tells the details of the method of treatment, formula, the formulation of herbs, dose, method of decoction and contraindication so that the formulas are applied easily in clinical treatment. Ever since a long time ago, doctors have thought highly of the research and application of this book. It's worth noting that ZhangZhongjing also thinks highly of the differentiation and treatment of the probable syndromes in this book. The probable syndrome comes from the five formulas:Minor Blue Dragon Decoction (xiaoqinglongtang), Minor Bupleurum Decoction (xiaochaihutang), Diuretic Decoction to Strengthen Yang of the Spleen and Kidney (zhenwutang), Decoction for Resuscitation to Dredging Meridians (tongmaisinitang) and Treating Cold Limbs Powder (sinisan). To begin with the definition of the probable syndrome, the thesis tells the explanation and research of the probable syndrome systemically. The first part of the thesis is the basic cognition of the five formulas on the probable syndrome. It analyzes the main syndrome and probable syndrome of the five formulas in aspects of etiopathogenisis, pathogenesis, and location of disease and so on. Moreover it takes examples of successive doctors'recognition of the probable syndrome in Treatise on Febrile Diseases (shanghanlun). The second part is the analysis of the probable syndrome in Treatise on Febrile Diseases (shanghanlun). It analyzes the definition of'probability','sign','syndrome', 'disease'and'probable syndrome', and divides the probable syndrome into three types:the type of coldness outside and fluid inside, the type of exogenous pathogen in Shaoyang and the type of exogenous pathogen in Shaoyin. Depending on the wholism, the probable syndrome can be used to confirm the formula in particular case. And then this part tells the relationship between the probable syndrome and main syndrome, as well as the probable syndrome and accompanied symptoms. The third part of the thesis is the investigation of the clinical application of the probable syndrome. Having doing the analysis on the characteristic of treatment method and medication of five formulas above, and statistic and analysis on adding and subtracting drugs, this part summarizes eight features of adding and subtracting drugs i.e.'Warm herb is used widely to treat cough','Poria is good at diuresis', The syndrome of stomachache should be treated by tow kinds of drugs','Ramulus Cinnamomi and Poria are used differently to treat cardiopalmus','Subtract Herba Ephedrae if the diseased position is inside','Trichosanthis and Radix Ginseng are used differently to treat dipsia','Subtract Radix Scutellariae in case of fluid with predominance of yin','Use common stuff at home'. At last it takes five clinical cases of probable syndrome for example where the five formulas are applied. The forth part of the thesis tells the characteristic of diagnosis and treatment based on differentiation of symptoms and signs after analyzing the probable syndrome. The diagnosis and treatment on the probable syndrome expresses the characteristic of the combination of disease and syndrome in Treatise on Febrile Diseases (shanghanlun). The summarized regulation'Disease is corresponding to main syndrome and treatment is corresponding to main formula','Formula is corresponding to main herb, and adding and subtracting should be proper','Different drugs are applied on the same syndrome, and recognize syndromes by the herbs' about the adding and subtracting drugs, which is the model of adding and subtracting drugs in later time. The diagnosis and treatment on the probable syndrome of Treatise on Febrile Diseases (shanghanlun) expresses the important thought of diagnosis and treatment based on differentiation of symptoms and signs in Traditional Chinese Medicine, explains the essence of complicated and changeable of diseases, and emphasizes the important principle that'It is important for doctor to change the formula'and'Good doctor doesn't have changeless formula', which is very important principle of adding and subtracting drugs in clinical treatment. The probable syndrome, which may be accompanied with disease, doesn't only express the mechanism of the development and change of disease, but also determines the adding and subtracting drugs of the main formula. Therefore, choosing formula on the basis of main syndrome, changing drugs on the basis of probable syndrome and understanding the probable syndrome overall are of great benefit to clinical diagnosis and treatment.
