Objective: By studying cerebral CT value of lobes and bi-frontal index in patients with unipolar depressive disorder, we aimed to explore the cerebral structural imaging changes, and further to invesgate whether depreesion was a degenerative disease of central nervous system or not. Methods: 1. subjects: 100 unipolar depressed subjects and 100 nondepressed healthy control subjects matched for age, gender, and education were included. All subjects were measured by CCMD-3 (China Classification of Mental Disorder) including 24 items Hamilton Rating Scales of Depression. In patients HAMD sorces were requested≥17,but HAMD≤7 in controls.2. Cerebral CT were performed in 100 patients with unipolar depressive disorder and 100 normal subjects, to compute CT value of lobes. And the bi-frontal index was measured in 80 of 100 unipolar depressed paients and 100 normal subjects.3. All datas were disposed by SPSS13.0 software. The Averages of Quntities between unipolar depressed paients and normal subjects, were disposed by Paired/Matched T-Test. The relation between CT value and bi-frontal index and clinic character was measured by Pearson Corralation and Linear Regression. Results: 1. Left frontal CT value of Unipolar depression(40.22±1.80) was less than control group(41.37±1.25), the difference was significant, while there is no obvious difference in right frontal index. 2. Left frontal CT value was negatively associated with age (Beta=-0319,P<0.01) and duration of depression(Beta =-0.355,P<0.01), and right frontal index was positively related to age(Beta =-0.218,P<0.01), while the correlation with duration of unipolar depression(P> 0.05) was not significant. 3. Left frontal index of the unipolar depression(24.92±2.64) was more enlarged than control group(23.87±2.25), the difference was significant, while there was no obvious difference in right frontal index. 4. Left frontal index was positively associated with age(Beta =0.357,P<0.01)and duration of depression(Beta =0.289,P<0.01), and right frontal index was positively related to age(Beta =0.316,P<0.01), while the correlation with duration of unipolar depression (P>0.05) was not significant. Conclusion: 1. Compared with normal subjects, the atrophy was present in the left frontal(dominant Semi-sphere)and temporal lobe of unipolar depression and the degree of the former might be associated with duration of depression. With the extending of duration of depression, the atrophy of the left frontal lobe maybe aggravated, it might sugest the suppose that depreesion was a degenerative disease of central nervous system. 2. It was possible that the left frontal lobe was one of dominating parts of depression.
