Objectives: The diameters of the retrobulbar optic nerve (OND) in glaucomatous eyes at different stages were measured by B-scan ultrasonography. Using these data, the relation between OND and visual field defect as well as the accuracy and viability of this OND measurement technique were investigated. Methods: The normal contrast group included 40 eyes, POAG group 115 eyes. According to the different in standard automated perimetry, the POAG group was divided into 4 subgroups, the pre-perimetric goups (PP) that included 20 eyes, the early perimetric damage group (EP) 32 eyes, the middle perimetric damage group (MP) 30 eyes and the late perimetric damage group (LP) 33 eyes. The data such as the patients' ages, visual acuities, IOP, OND, MS, MD and LV were collected and calculated using the software of SPSS.Results: OND for the normal contrast group was 3.02±0.35mm, for the POAG group was 2.73±0.33mm, and there was a significant difference between the two groups (p<0.01) . In POAG subgroups, OND decreased with the progressing of the course. OND was in line with MS, contra in line with MD, and had no relationship with LV.Conclusions: The OND of POAG patients becoming smaller with the progress of the disease as well as the defect of the visual field. It reflected the missing course of optic nerve fiber and proved the theory that OND are significantly correlated with glaucomatous changes of the optic disk and retinal nerve fiber layer, and it also proved echographic measurements of the orbital optic nerve is a simple and accurate technique and helpful in the diagnose and statement of suspected glaucoma.
