Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)is a wondrous treasure and it is an important part of alternative and complementary medicine in the world.Because of our vast territory and multitude of dialects, the impact of traditional culture characteristics, the impact of minority medicine and foreign medicine, there are a considerable part of technical terms that have broad extensions, unclear meanings, one term with many meanings, one meaning with many terms, and term progression.Terminology is the scientific concept of language symbols. It is a fundamental core of promoting and developing modern science. The precondition of developing TCM is to standardize these technical terms. For the past few years, specialists have been standardizing a great amount of terms, but most of them are related to syndromes and diseases. The terms of symptoms and signs have not been systematically standardized. This thesis selects the indisposition of extremities as the focus of research. It systematical standardizes the terms of symptoms and signs through the research of history origins and ancient documents from these aspects:rectification of terminology, origin and development and the synonym. The first part summarizes the recorded conditions of the symptoms and signs which includes terms of both ancient and modern times.Regarding the ancient document records, due to the difference in time periods, zone, school ideology, and the gradual developing and understanding of Chinese vocabulary, there was not a unified terminology for the understanding of symptoms. As for modern research, the"National Organized College Textbook"and the"Codification of Various Reference Book"was adopted in order to standardize TCM terms, setting professional standards, and setting national standards. The second part of this thesis focuses on the standardized terminology regarding the indisposition of the extremities, including convulsion, tremor, tetraplegia, gout, beriberi and sweating of the hands and feet.Clarifying of document origin was used by the method of selecting from various historic documents, according to different dynasty's representative medical work and the category which the symptom terms belongs to.To complete historic origin and document research(basis of explaining and naming of terms)combined with modern understanding of such terms, this thesis systematical standardizes every terms from these aspects: rectification of terminology, origin and development and the synonym. The third part summarizes the regularity of the variations of the terms of the disposition of the extremities. It explains the symptoms and signs, disease name, and the earliest usage and most general used terminology during each period of time with the use of graphs and charts to explain the progression of these terms,as well as discussing the limitation of this thesis. Finally, developing a structured framework for TCM terminology, and effectively standardize and interpret the progression of symptom and sign terminology.
