Survival Survey Of The Beijing Contract Nurses

Objective:To describe the life and work conditions of Contracted Nurses who were randomly selected in 11 hospitals in Beijing;to describe subjective feeling on their life conditions,and analyze major problems in their life and work.Method:Using self-designed questionnaire,with totally 93 items.The contents of the questionnaire include basic situation,life and work conditions.By the convenient sampling survey,and by visiting 180 samples from four third-class A-level hospitals and 180 samples from seven two-class A-level hospitals of Beijing from May to September in 2006,we do the survey for the living state of those samples.It adopts SPSS 11.5 to set up a database for statistic analysis.Result:1) General conditions of Contracted Nurses:The average age of Contracted Nurses is 24.38±3.91 and their average working length is 3.4 years,11.7%of them have a professional title higher than Nurse Practitioner and 97.7%of them have signed contracts with the hospital.2) Subjective/Objective Representation of Contracted nurses' Living State: In aspects of the subjective representation of Contracted Nurses' living state, physiological hierarchy:the average lodging area of Contracted Nurses is 2-3 m~2 and their average incomes are 1,526 Yuan,no time for leisure(61.3%);safety hierarchy: social security(84.2%),five insurances(5.1%),mistakes in work(16.9%);love and belonging hierarchy:good interpersonal relationship(81.1%);self-respect hierarchy: social respect(60.2%),work recognition by Nurse-in-charge(65.6%),and self-fulfillment hierarchy:promotion(71.9%),continuing education(83.4%),no promotion opportunity(88.3%),no publication of articles(2.9%).In aspects of the subjective representation of Contracted Nurses' living state, physiological hierarchy:satisfaction of sleep(18.3%),dissatisfaction of habitation condition(43.5%),dissatisfaction of overtime work reward(51.3%);safety hierarchy: poor occupation stability(60.5%);love and belonging hierarchy:satisfaction of interpersonal relationship(60.1%);self-respect hierarchy:social respect(31.2%),unfair treatment in salary(63.9%),and self-fulfillment hierarchy:study opportunity(77.7%), pleasures of life(29.8%),unfair opportunity(40.1%).3) Order of Contracted nurses' Satisfaction on Their Living State.Top five items listed in Contracted nurses' Satisfaction on objective existence is as follows:participation in continuing education;Making no mistakes in work;Having harmonious interpersonal relationship;availability of on-the-job training and friend's aid. As for subjective feelings,the list is as follows:satisfied with family relationship; teamwork feeling;satisfied with supports of friends;good interpersonal relationship and concentration of work and studying. Top five items listed in Contracted nurses' Unsatisfaction on their living state is as follow: not availability of social and medical security;without publication of articles;less opportunity for promotion;lower than average income of Beijing(2,300 Yuan);poor conditions in habitation;as for the unsatisfactory subjective feelings:unfairness in reward;less opportunity for leisure;instability in occupation;unfairness in income assessment;unsatisfactory overtime reward.Conclusion:1) Contracted nurses' poor physiological condition shall be improved,their salary is lower than the average level in Beijing;2) Regarding Contracted nurses' subjective feeling on their security hierarchy,they feel that their jobs are unstable;3) Contracted nurses are satisfied with the needs for love and belonging;4) In terms of self-respect,unreasonable distribution system in hospital,few opportunities given by hospital to Contracted nurses to be promoted in the post and the title;5) With regard to self-fulfillment,on the one hand,contracted nurses take a pessimistic view of their future and consider the future is not promising.On the other hand,they are diligent in the field of continuation education;98.5%of contracted nurses have a demand for learning.
