Objective: To collect, organize and standardize the clinical data of formulas and herbs from TCM proctology. To establish a large sample Access database of clinical information in TCM proctology. To exhibit the regular patterns of diseases, syndrome patterns, symptoms, methods of treatment and application of herbs in TCM proctology by analyzing this database.Method: Establish an Access Database of formulas and herbs of TCM proctology so as to store and manage data and also to follow the data changing. Produce various forms by searching, ranking, filtration, editing and modifying data, according to different requirements. Set Formula Number and Formula Name as master key to link the main table and the two sub tables . Then search the repeating items from Symptom field and Herb Name field, in order to find the correspondence relation between symptoms and herbs.Results: This database contains 480 formulas of TCM proctology and has the total herb application frequency of 2332 which are related to 540 species. This research standardized the terminology of TCM proctology, like disease name, formula name, symptoms, herbs, etc. The research on the main table discovers the distribution of high frequency herbs, high frequency diseases and syndrome patterns and also high frequency symptoms. The result shows that the herbs with high frequency are from the following categories: herbs for tonifying qi, herbs for astringent, herbs for arresting hemorrhage, herbs for promoting blood circulation and herbs for qi regulation. When speaking of single herb, Bai Fang, She Xiang, Huang Qi, Ci Wei Pi are the most frequently used herbs. The two sub tables are used for analyzing the commonly used herbs for melena, anal prolapse and aching. The research shows that herbs like Huang Qi and Fu Zi are frequently used for symptoms of melena, anal prolapse and aching. The use of Zhi Ke and She Xiang has guidance value for treating pain.Conclusion: This research successfully applied computer technology to the study of the clinical data of formulas and herbs in TCM proctology. It also created a foundation for the future research by standardizing the terminology of TCM proctology and establishing the database. The research found the common distribution and regular patterns of herb application, which provided reference and accordance for clinical practice of doctors from TCM Proctology department. It provided the theoretical and data support for development and research of new drugs.
