Objective: To observe therapeutic effects of routine needling combined with moxibustion on zhi yin (BL67) treatment on primary hemifacial spasm. Methods: Random, control and single blind trial was performed in 60 cases of primary hemifacial spasm, with diagnostic criteria of primary hemifacial spasm from Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Science and Diagnostic and Therapeutic Effect Evaluation Criteria of Diseases and Syndromes in Traditional Chinese Medicine (State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1994). All cases were randomly divided into control group treated by routine needling and treatment group treated by routine needling with moxibustion on zhi yin (BL67). The patients were treated once every day, five times as a course, two days for rest between the courses, and six courses altogether. The therapeutic effects were systematic evaluated by Cohen~1 criteria for evaluating therapeutic effect of primary hemifacial spasm and all the statistic dates were processed by SPSS13.0.Results: The total effective rate of treatment group was 90.00%, and cure rate, 66.67%. The total effective rate of control group was 82.76%, and cure rate, 58.62%. The effective rate in treatment group is superior to that in control group, the differences being significant (P<0.05).Conclusions: As a new way to treat primary hemifacial spasm, routine needling combined with moxibustion on zhi yin (BL67) method has an obvious therapeutic effect and low recrudescence rate.
