Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease that can be fatal, though with recent medical advances, fatalities are becoming increasingly rare. As with other autoimmune diseases, the immune system attacks the body's cells and tissue, resulting in inflammation and tissue damage. SLE can affect any part of the body, but most often harms the heart, joints, skin, lungs, blood vessels, liver, kidneys and nervous system. The course of the disease is unpredictable, with periods of illness (called flares) alternating with remission. SLE can occur at any age, and is most common in women.SLE was not Systematically described in the ancient book literatures of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), but there were lots of Similar expounds in them, especially in Synopsis of Golden Chamber. Yin-yang pestilence in Synopsis of Golden Chamber was known as the most similar to SLE, and there were other similar expounds such as convulsive disease, consumptive disease, shenzhe disease, hypochondrium fluid retention and jaundice in it. Etiology and pathogenesis, therapeutic method and herbs on these diseases provided useful ways and basis for later doctor in treating SLE. There were lots of similar records in other ancient book literatures.Etiology and pathogenesis of SLE are not definite. It is thought, in western medicine, that it is caused by inheritance, medicine, infection, sunlight, estrogen and emotional disorder; it is thought ,in TCM, that it is induced by imbalance of yin and yang, Qi and blood maladjustments, stagnation of qi and blood and meridian blocking, these caused by natural endowment deficiency, six pathogenic factors and seven emotions. Now, the Etiology and pathogenesis of SLE are believed that were internal and external pathogenic factor and obstruction of meridian by blood stasis. The internal factor is mainly for the disorder of zang-fu organs and yin-yang, especially for deficiency of the kidney yin, and the external is mainly for heat-toxin and damp-heat. syndrome differentiations of SLE were determined to six types in guiding principles of clinical research on new drugs of Chinese herbs by medicine council of the ministry of health(2002): toxic heat flourishing, hepatic and renal yin deficiency, spleen-kidney yang deficiency, yin deficiency inner heat, arthritis of wind, humidity and heat type, qi and yin deficiency. What is more, SLE is so complex that many clinical doctor have unique idea which enrich therapeutic method and typing. Studies in laboratory provide reliable basises for treatment of SLE by TCM.classical prescriptions were extensively used in treatment of SLE, and it almost appeared every type of SLE. In this paper, SLE was classified to nine types: toxic heat flourishing, arthritis of wind, humidity and heat type, yin deficiency inner heat, spleen-kidney deficiency, Disharmony of Ying and Wei, maladjustments of dispersinga and descending functions of Lung Qi, incoordination between liver and stomach and cardiac-kidney yang deficiency. And 27 pieces of classical prescriptions, which were commonly used in treatment of SLE, were classified and discussed, source, mechanism of prescription, studies of clinical application, analysis on medical case of six pieces of them (shengmabiejia decoction, baihu decoction, jinkuishenqi decoction, baihujiaguizhi decoction, tinglidazaoxiefei decoction and guizhishaoyao decoction) was analyzed detailedly. The Chinese herbs of classical prescriptions were extensively used in treatment of SLE. SLE is a chronic autoimmune disease that is most common in women. Because the blood in women is very important to themselves, and it is easy to be lost if it was not be cared, which can lead to yin and blood deficiency and yin deficiency and fire excess, nourishing yin is the most important method in all ways (nourishing yin, clearing heat, eliminating dampness, activating blood, dispelling wind, expelling phlegm and invigoration) in treatment of SLE.39 pieces of Chinese herbs, which were commonly used in treatment of SLE, were classified and discussed, 14 of them (radix rehmanniae, cassia twig, gypsum fibrosum, anemarrhena, Descurainia sophia Webb ex Prantl, astragalus, white peony root, angelica, small red bean, menispermaceae, polyporus, sophora flavescens, cimicifuga foetida, rhubarb)was analyzed detailedly. In summary, the purpose of the paper is giving better ways for laboratory research and clinical application of classical prescriptions in treatment of SLE by studying the documents of origin of diagnosis and therapy, etiology and pathogenesis and dialectical treatment on SLE and discussing clinical application of classical prescriptions and Chinese herbs.
