This dissertation is composed of two parts: a review article and a clinical research. The first part is a review article, which includes the main contents as following: the mechanisms and classification of emesis caused by chemotherapy; advances, problems and prospects in management of emesis caused by chemotherapy with western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine. The second part is a clinical study. Objective: To observe the effects of Tropisetron combined with herbs used externally in treatment of emesis and anorexia caused by cisplatin-based chemotherapy. Methods: 63 patients, who were consistent with the eligibility criteria of the clinical study, were divided into two groups: treatment group and control group. All the patients were received cisplatin- based chemotherapy. The patient in the treatment group were received Tropisetron and dexamethasone combined with external use of herbs to treat cisplatin-based emesis. The patients in the control group were received Tropisetron and dexamethasone alone. The symptoms of nausea, vomiting and decreased appetite during the first 5 days of chemotherapy cycle and 24 hours after 5 days'chemotherapy were observed. Results: Nausea and vomiting during the first 5 days of chemotherapy in treatment group were less serious than in control group; the incidence of dalayed vomiting and anorexia 24 hours after 5 days'chemotherapy in treatment group was lower than that in control group. The difference between two groups is significant. Conclusion: Tropisetron combined with external use of herbs is effective in treatment of nausea, emesis and anorexia caused by cisplatin-based chemotherapy. Also, the quality of life of cancer patients receiving chemotherapy is improved. For further research, a multicenter, randomized controlled treat is needed in further.
