Diabetes mellius ("DM") is known to be a multi-factors disease and generally it is classified and treated under "Xiao Ke" category from the traditional Chinese medicine ("TCM") theory. In this connection, the diagnosis and treatment of DM usually adopted the major models of Xiao Ke. Recently, it is understood that DM is not the same as Xiao Ke. The clinical treatment of DM gradually broke through that of the traditional model of Xiao Ke. The theory "Diagnosis and treatment of Diabetes mellius by applying the TCM theory with focus on the diagnosis and treatment of three organs and system altogether - the liver, the spleen and the kidney" proposed by my tutor, Professor Gao Sihua, is new viewpoint in the treatment of DM. This theory based upon the collective understanding of former scholars on Xiao Ke and merged the pathological changes of DM with the understanding of TCM. This paper discussed the scientific aspect of the tutor's theory by reviewing the TCM history of Xiao Ke, giving attention to both ancient concepts and modern concepts, and analysing the pathological symptoms of DM from the TCM point of view and finally looking into the pattern and frequency of symptoms of a clinical research headed by the tutor. The research method is basically journals review and analysis with key attention on Xiao Ke and modern medical research on DM whereas the clinical data quoted in the paper related to the information of a project headed by the tutor funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China on the pattern of the clinical syndromes and symptoms of 2501 cases of DM patients. The paper discussed the scientific aspects of the Tutor's theory by reviewing the history of Xiao Ke in TCM history with key emphasis on the explaination of the syndromes and symptoms of DM from the TCM view and modern medical science and finally objectively summarized the syndromes of 2501 DM patients at different stages and the regular pattern. The results coincided with the Tutor's theory - diagnosis and treatment of DM based upon the three organs (the liver, spleen and kidney) at the same time.In conclusion, the Tutor's theory updated the traditional TCM point of view on the diagnosis of DM and on the whole, the theory allows flexibility to the treatment at different stages of DM and it is easy to master and apply. In addition, it is believed that the Tutor's theory shall have a sampling effect to the standardization of diagnosis and treatment of DM and the medical formulae will serve as a point of reference to the future development of new drugs in DM. It gives a guiding effect in clinical treatment of DM and is worth further discussion and development in future.
