Tian-Shi Ye is one of the greatest masters in Chinese medicine's history. He created a number of different differentiations. These include the defensive, Qi, nutrient and blood phase syndrome differentiation, the Theory of stomach Yin, the Theory of transmittal of disease into the collaterals from chronic illness, and the Eight Extra Meridians syndrome differentiation. Although the Eight Extra Meridians Syndrome differentiation had been mentioned in the Nei Jing and later discussed by other Chinese medicine doctors, this differentiation did not have a recognized academic theory or recommended herbal formulas. Tian-Shi Ye was able to summarize the theory and herbal formulas based on the Eight Extra Meridians Syndrome differentiation that a former Chinese medicine master used in his clinic. This research paper has six parts:First part of this research summarizes the viewpoint of Tian-Shi Ye on the Eight Extra Meridians syndrome differentiation. He writes on the clinical theory, strategy and method of treatment including herbal medicine using clinical cases from internal medicine, external medicine and other areas of clinic such as gynecology. The second part of this research is a brief introduction of Tian-Shi Ye and his books. The third part of this research summarizes the viewpoints of the Eight Extra Meridians from all past literature which includes the pathways, functions and symptoms associated with the Eight Extra Meridians. The fourth part of this research discusses the extent of the Eight Extra Meridians syndrome differentiation, the relationship between the Eight Extra Meridians syndrome differentiation and the Visceral Syndrome differentiation. There is also a discussion and analysis of Herbal formulas used with Eight Extra Meridians syndrome differentiation. The fifth part of this research summarizes the commentary and clinical practice of Chinese medicine doctors who were born after Tian-Shi Ye.The sixth part provides a conclusion which points out the historical value compared with the modern view of Tian-Shi Ye's Eight Extra Meridians syndrome differentiation and provides the inspiration for use of this differentiation in modern clinic.
