Abstract/Summary:
This is a reviewed study of the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) researches on osteoporosis (OP) in the last decade, and combined with a relativity study of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and OP in recent years. This study explains what is secondary osteoporosis caused by COPD in both ways of TCM and Modern medicine, and shows that COPD is one of the risk factors lead to OP, which pathogenesis possibly was related to smoking, hypoxia, endocrine disturbance, dystrophy and hormonal therapy, et al. The Modern medicine believed that combined drugs treatment (calcium, vitamin D and osteo-absorption inhibitors) for OP will be a better choice than others. Also the new drugs for bone formation are still in lab stages which need pass clinic test. In TCM this disease is belong to "bone flaccidility Zheng " or "bone Bi Zheng", and mostly depend on the state of kidney-essence whether are wax or wan, also closely related to the function of spleen and liver. This study shows that the function of lung maladjustment is one of key risk factors of deficiency of kidney-essence, and further discusses the correlation pathogenesis between lung and kidney, also believes that COPD and OP have a common pathogenesis based on the theory of TCM. In this article, the concept of "Kidney deficiency" based on Modern medicine and the potential mechanism of TCM therapy for OP are briefly introduced. In general the pathogenesis of OP is multi-factor. Then the therapy of TCM is characterized by the concept of organic whole, therefore which has all-sided adjustment and is overweight than any chemical drugs. So there are progressing perspectives on the treatment of TCM for OP. For the purpose of human being health, taking both advantages of TCM and Modern medicine, and combining modern science and technology are the critical way.
