Hypertension is one of common clinical syndromes.It results in many kinds of heart diseases and other organ diseases.Traditional Chinese medicine and pharmacy therapy is widely concerned as its predominance over comprehensive action resulting from its taking the whole body into consideration.In the ancient times, many doctors and clinicians gradually accumulate comprehensive experience about dizziness and headache,especially accompanied by dropsy. Maybe these symptoms were caused by the Hypertension. The literature in this aspect is considerable. The historical origin, development and special advances in each dynasty were narrated in the literatures of TCM from pre-Qin to the end of Qing dynasty. Characteristics in the different phases was researched and studied in this article will be beneficial to make a profound exploration on the treatment and syndrome differentiation of Hypertension in the later times.This article is emphasizing a review of both ancient and modern literature. The contents of the first part of this article determined the definition and range of Hypertension and made a clear definition according to the standard of modern Chinese medicine and made certain the range of diseases and disorders in western medicine including Hypertension. Dizziness and headache of this syndrome existed in the ancient literature and different knowledge occurred in the different dynasties divided into the following phases as pre-Qin,Han-Jin-Shui-Tang,Song-Jin-Yuan,Ming and Qing dynasties. Much space was applied to the exploring and discussing the important treatises and viewdpoints of physicians in each dynasty. Advanced and original points were all absorbed into this paper.The origin from which the ideal was derived also analyzed.The contents of the second part summarized the academic origin and development in those aspects of etiology,pathogenesis,diagnosis, differentiation, peculiar medical use,nursing and prevention of Hypertension on the basis of the study,etc.The contents of the third part,we discussed several questions:first,what's different between the two symptoms of Hypertension by TCM ----flaming-up of liver-fire and hyperactivity of liver-yang. Second, how to use the diuresis to control the Hypertension. Third,we analyzed the mechanism of the wiry pulse based on the modern pathology, indicating integrating four diagnostic method together.Four, it's more important to prevent and corret the impact on the relative organ rather than to control the pressure simply.
