Objective: To observe the effect of Chinese herbal medicine on the salivary glands of patients with Nasopharyngeal cancer during radiotherapy (RT).Methods: Fifty cases with NPC were randomly divided into observation group treated with RT plus Chinese herbal Medicine and control group treated with RT alone. The symptom of patients, such as the severity of salivary glands damnification, the mouth reaction and qingze tongue was noted . And at the same time, the flow speed and amylase content of salivary, the rate of secreting 99mTcO4- were measured before and during the RT.Results: with the dose of RT increasing, the flow speed and amylase content of salivary declined, the same results were mersured with radioisope Scintiphoto graphy. But the declining degree in observation group was significantly more falttend than that of the control group (flow speed and amylase content of salivary, 12Gy, P<0.05,40.8Gy, 76.8Gy, P<0.01; the rate of secreting 99mTcO4- , 12Gy, 40.8Gy, 76.8Gy, P<0.05) .The severity of salivary glands damnification in observation group was lighter than that of the control group (P<0.05) ,the same results were observed in the mouth reaction and qingze tongue. Conclusion: Chinese herbal Medicine used in this study was effective to increase the flow speed, amylase content and the rate of secreting 99mTcO4- and so protect the salivary glands of patients with NPC during RT.
