Sini Tang (Decoction for Extremities-Cold) is a basic formula for the syndrome of yang deficiency with excessive cold in Shaoyin disease. However, the understandings of the therapeutic effect of Sini Tang are different from the ancient to the modern times. Most of the ancient physicians believed that this decoction could warm yang to dispel the cold, others believed that it could restore yang for resuscitation. But the present teaching materials, which reflect the majority opinions of modern physicians, insist that the therapeutic effect of Sini Tang is to restore yang for resuscitation. These two different opinions touch upon not only the accuracy of nomenclature in Chinese medicine, but also the exact understanding of the therapeutic effect of Sini Tang. This thesis uses the traditional research method to work over the theoretic discussion on the therapeutic effect of Sini Tang. First, by means of analyzing the different implication of warming yang to dispel the cold and restoring yang for resuscitation to make clear that they are different therapeutic methods aimed at different degrees of yang deficiency. We then get the conclusion that Sini Tang can only be used for the common state or the initial stage of yang deficiency through the study on the items in Shanghan Lun(Treatise on Cold-attack). And we make it clear that the yang deficiency syndrome in Shaoyin disease can be departed to three different stages, they are the initial stage of yang deficiency or the common state of yang deficiency with excessive yin, the stage of escaping of the deficiency yang, and the stage of yang exhaustion. The therapeutic method of warming yang to dispel the cold should be used for the initial stage or the common state of yang deficiency, while the therapeutic method of restoring yang for resuscitation should be used for the serious syndrome of yang escape. These two methods are obviously different. If we could exactly recognize that the therapeutic effect of Sini Tang is to warm yang and dispel coldness, we surely would know how to use it in clinic more effectively.
