The study of the "four seasons, five-zang and ying-yang"theories on thebasic of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM), which is a probe into human body'svital movement law. It emphasizes on the physiological and pathological changesin human body. It corresponds to yin, yang, ascending and descending in nature,changes of chill, fever, warm and cool, alternation from day to night and seasonsof spring, summer, autumn and winter. It has a synchronous rule either. Therewill be a great promotion on recognizing and comprehending the basic theory ofTCM when we discuss the mechanism on formation and variation of the rule. Amongthe total, the change in the waxing and waning of yin and yang from day tonight ,which is the foundation of forming the rule of sleep and awareness. Whenthe rule be destroyed, sleep and awareness will be in disorder and the syndromesof insomnia will be happen. Insomnia is one of the common syndromes in clinic. It appears as thedeficiency of hours and depth of sleep. Sometimes the patients can't allayingtiredness or restoring physical strength and energy. Those who are lightly willdifficult falling asleep or sleep but not soundly, sleep but easy to wake orawake but no more sleep. Those who are heavy will be insomnia on whole nightsand accompanied with spiritlessness and weakness, dizziness and headache,palpitation and amnesia, etc. Now the incidence rate of insomnia is very high,especially in the young people. The etiopathogenisis and pathogenesis ofinsomnia is multiplicity. Using the diagnostic methods of the west medicine,we can seldom judging the cause and mechanism of some syndromes of insomnia.Based on differentiation, the treatment of TCM set out from the whole. It hassuperiority in synthetic action. Then it got extensive attention. More than 2000 years from pre-Qin to the end of Qing dynasty, afterlong-standing clinical observing and practicing, the doctors summarized aplenty of experiences in differing symptoms and using medicines. Theyconsummated the recognition of insomnia's etiopathogenisis and pathogenesis,feature of invasion and treatment based on differentiation either. They alsoaccumulated massive documents and data. I selected the records of insomnia from18 books of the ancient doctors all-sided. Then I filtrated, classified andanalyzed the records. Based on the records, I explained the historical originand development of insomnia from pre-Qin to the end of Qing dynasty. I alsoexplained the recorded development and unique opinion in various periods. Iadded up and analyzed the prescriptions and medicines which have been used totreat insomnia in those 18 books and calculated the most commonly used ones. This paper was separated two parts. One is the study of theory. Using a lotof words, this paper dig and analyzed the main books and ideas along the variousperiods. The paper also summarized the advanced and unique places. It analyzedthe origin of the emergence in medical ideas and the characteristic on thetreatment of insomnia. The other part is statistical analysis. Based on the statistical resultsof the prescriptions and medicines for insomnia in the 18 books, I analyzed themand described the successive changes and modern researches in Wen Dan Tang andSuan Zao Ren Tang , which used number of times is maximum. I discovered thatthere are too many different editions in these two recipes. It is the first timeof my summarizing Suan Zao Ren Tang. Otherwise, according to the applies of Ren shen, Fu ling and Suan zaorenare in the front of third in monographies and non-monographies, I firstlyproposed that using the method of supplement vital Qi for enriching blood andtranquilizing to treat insomnia should be the preferred method in treating thedeficiency type of insomnia. It has a great directing effect in clinic. When I summed up the prescriptions and medicines which used for the diseasescombining insomnia, we discovered that Suan zao is the most useful and convenientmedicine in treating insomnia.
