| The famous TCM Book "Treatise on Febrile Disease"(Shang Han Lun), written by Dr. Zhang Zhong Jing, was the foundation for the TCM differentiation system. This book was regarded as the father of TCM science by later generations. Dr.Zhang who paid great attention to acupuncture treatment, developed unique acupuncture theories that made a deep impact on the development of modern acupuncture and enriched the acupuncture knowledge prior to East Han Dynasty. This thesis is based on the resemch of acupuncture theory from Treatise on Febrile Disease and analyses its perceptions in two parts. The first part of the book discusses the relationship between syndrome differentiation of six channels and the channel meridian theory. The six-channel differentiation based on the classification of the six channels, originated from "simple Questions". From analysis of the six-channel differentiation, it is apparent that the classification is based on the pathology of the channel meridian theory, as channel meridian is the foundations of the six-channel differentiation. Comparing the content of the six channel differentiation in Shang Han Li (under Shang Han Lun in the "Treaties of Febrile Diseases") and "Zhi Wei Bing" six channel pathology classification, Shang Han Lun has been found to be more corresponding to the channel meridian differentiation. The ancient book of "Ning Zhu-Channel theory" indicated the establishment of the channel meridian theory. Looking at the six-channel theory it is evident that the Ning Zhu-channel theory was the guiding principle to the six-channel differentiation. Even though Shang Han Lun's six-channel theory was derived from Nei Jing's Channel theory, Zhang Zhong Jing's Six Channel theory has a wider application. Firstly, addition of new knowledge and theories over the years has further enriched and broadened the six channel theory. Furthermore the research of Foot Six Channels and the application of Guan, He, and Shu in the Shang Han Lun shows that Zhang Zhong Jing developed the six-channel differentiation theory from Nei Jing and transformed it into something bigger, with a wider range of applications. Thus it can be concluded that under the guideline of Nei Jing's channel meridian theory, allthe symptoms and signs that appear in the different stage of exogenous disease can be integrated and classified, differentiated and treated based on the characteristic of the channel meridian disease. This holistic treatment theory based on differentiation is the most significant clinical application under channel meridian theory besides its use in acupuncture treatment. The second part of Shang Han Lun classifies and integrates all the relative terms of acupuncture, which includes differentiation, the combined treatment of acupuncture and herbs, and the application of extra acu-points. These terms summed up the ancient theory of acupuncture and channel meridian theory, and promoted clinical acupuncture in the years to come. This thesis collects modern research and experiments and tries to use modern medicine, molecular biology, physiology, and many different points of view to prove the therapeutic effect of acupuncture treatment according to Shang Han Lun. Using modern medical molecular research it will be shown that traditional Chinese medicine treatment and differentiation is just as effective and scientific as modem medical treatment. There has always been a debate of whether moxibustion treatment is appropriate in patients with heat syndrome. According to the ancient texts, acupuncture treatment is contraindicated for heat syndrome. Therefore, further research may need to be carried out to find out the answers to this question. In Shang Han Lun it is said that acupuncture is allowed for patients with "Shao Yin disease with symptoms and signs of bloody and purulent defecation", this further progressed to today's understanding of acupuncture treatment of dysentery. In the text, the names of channels are given for dysentery but specific points were not mentioned. In fact, the point used for treatment i... |
