This thesis will provide a detailed discussion on the Medicinal decoctions including various insects as composed and described by Zhang, Zhong Jing in his famous books, the "Shang Han Lun"and "Golden Cabinet". The first part of this study covers the therapeutic properties and functions of the individual medicinal insects as they often represent a key ingredient of Zhang, Zhong .Jing's decoctions. The second part will then discuss how individual Medicinal insects and Chinese herds are being combined in each decoction as well as principles of their proper usage and dosage selection. Two case studies will subsequently be given to illustrate the above points further. The conclusion is followed by a summary on how Zhang, Zhong Jing's original formulae have been changed over the years by various other ancient Chinese doctors and how these decoctions are being practised clinically nowdays.
