Medical image visualization can provide much valuable information for doctors' clinical diagnosis. More and more people pay attention to visualization, which make its techniques' developing very fast. With such fast development, many unresolved problems in the 3D visualization software find the new resolutions by support of many new rendering algorithms and computer techniques.Based on the integration of the advanced Visualization Toolkit (VTK) and the Real-Time Rendering System (VolumePro), 4DView, a 3D real-time visualization system of medical images, which supports real-time 3D medical image (such as MR, CT image, etc.) visualization and interaction was developed. And the own design and realization of the display protocols were brought up by analyzing the internationally advanced 3D visualization work station and studying the display protocols' idea.First, the VTK, VolumePro and their integration were introduced briefly; then the system architecture and function modules of 4DView system were discussed; next, I mainly introduced the idea of the display protocol, and the frame of protocols were given; finally, I summarized the whole thesis and prospected the next work steps.Generally speaking, current system has basically realized the design purpose. 4DView system can effectively resolve the poor real-time characteristic of 3D medical image visualization and interaction, so it will have a bright future in the application area of the clinical diagnosis, therapy and medical research, etc. The realization of the display protocols resolved the main problems existing in the traditional 3D visualization work station, which pushed 4DView to a new generation of 3D visualization work station.
