Objective To investigate the evaluation of re-resection in the treatment of recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma. Methods. The followed-up data of 30 cases of recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma reoperated from 1988 to 1999 were retrospectively analyzed. Results Repeated resection were performed for 33 times on 30 cases of recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma. The 1, 2, 3 and 5 year survival rates in the total group were 93.3%, 73.3%, 56.7% and 36.7% respectively, with the median survival of 18.5 months, and the average survival of 26.0 months. The preliminary results were encouraging. Conclusions Repeated resection of recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma can markedly extend the life of patients, and can be accepted as the best treatment modality.
