Objective To measure the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptor flk-1 in eutopic and ectopic endometrium so as to investigate the roles they play in the ocurrence and progression of endometriosis. Methods Endometrium specimens were obtained from 26 normal uterus and 31 with endometriosis. VEGF and flk-1 expression were examined by immunohistochemical technique with specific monoclonal antibodies. Results 1 VEGF expression in ectopic endometrium was significantly stronger than that in eutopic endometrium ,and VEGF expression in the secretory phase of eutopic endometrium of endometriosis was stronger than that in normal endometrium.2 VEGF expression of glandular cells in both eutopic and ectopic endometrium of endometriosis showed a significant cyclic variation.3 The receptor flk-1 mainly expressed in the vascular endothelial cells , which in endometriosis was significantly stronger than that in normal endometrium. Conclusion VEGF is a important factor that may contribute to the pathegenesis of endometriosis by promoting neovascularization. |
