objective The purpose of this study was to detect the mutagenic activity of organic concentrates in water samples from six different facilities of secondary water supply. Methods Organic contaminants of water samples were concentrated by adsorption on XAD2 resin. Then two short梩erm assays (Ames test and bone marrow micronucleus test in the mouse) were performed to detect their mutagenicity. Results The results showed that: (1) No satistical significant were detected for every dose梘roup of water from secondary water supply and tap water in the mouse bone marrow micronucleus test. (2)Mutagenic activity were detected in all the water concentrates in Salmonella typhimurium strains TA98 and TA97 with or without S9. (3) To strain TA100 with or without Sg, it was the water from Zhonggeer Goods Corporation抯 secondary water supply facility showed mutagenic activity. (4) The ratio mutagenic activity of 19 water from secondary water supply facilities seemed to be stronger than tapwater. conclusion Indirect and direct frameshift mutagens existed in the water from six different secondary water supply facilities and tap water in Urumqi. There are mutagens that cause base? pair substitution in water from Zhonggeer Goods Corporation?s secondary water supply facility. The mutagenic activity of water from secondary water. supply facilities is stronger than tap water.
