Goals:Periarthritis of shoulder joint (be hereafter referred to as scapulohumeral periarthritis, SP) is a common clinical disease featured as shoulder pain and motivation obstacle induced by intra-articular adhesion formed by chronic aseptic inflammation of parenchyma such as muscles, tendons and joint capsule around the shoulder. Severe cases could affect other parts of the body, more often happen on elderly people, therefore seriously affect the life quality of this group; there are many clinical studies regarding SP, however, the experimental study on animal model regarding SP is quite limited so far. The experimental study is majorly focusing on the effect of rabbit SP model treated by electroacupuncture and the underlying mechanism is discussed.Therefore,①we introduced all the characteristics of EA, reviewed the clinical and experimental development of SP treated using EA in order to let more people know and grasp this simple, effective treatment technique and hope this technique could be rapidly developed, promoted and extended;②And discuss the effect mechanism of SP treated by EA through observing the influence on the SP rabbit model after the treatment by the "SJ14" and "LI11", in order to provide reliable experimental data and research basis for the scientists in the near future.Methods:①establish the rabbit SP model by using persistent mechanical strain and ice compress;②Observing the pathological change of tendon of the tissue around the shoulder joint and synovium of joint capsule by using Hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining;③Test the content of interleukin-1β, transforming growth factor-β1,5-hydroxytryptamine and prostaglandin E2 in plasma and local tissue (supraspinous muscle and bicipital muscle of arm) by using enzyme immunoassay;④Test the content of hydroxyproline and DNA in local tissue by us ing colorimetry.Results:①The concentration decrease of interleukin-1βand transforming growth factor-β1 after the treatment of EA indicates the improvement of the inflammation ofEA mainly focused on local pathological tissue;②The content change of 5-hydroxytryptamine and prostaglandin E2 indicates that EA plays a minor role on inducing the anti-pain factors in plasma but play a crucial role on the anti-pain factors in local tissue; therefore, EA has a better anti-pain effect on the local pathological tissue.③The significant change of the hydroxyproline and DNA content indicates that EA is able to significantly improve the organization and adhesion of the local pathological tissue of rabbit SP model. Conclusions:EA are capable to effectively treat the local and systemic syndromes of SP. It suggests electroacupuncture has an anti-inflammatory, analgesia and immuno-regulatory comprehensive effect in SP.
