ObjectivesTrough analyzing the hospitalization expense data of stroke inpatients in 100 Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) hospitals, understand in depth the composition and relative influence factors of the hospitalization cost of stroke inpatients in TCM hospitals. For the first time, we compare hospi-talization expenses of medical treatment with TCM, combination of TCM and Western medicine, and Western medicine, explore the characteristics and reasons of the increase of stroke medical treatment with TCM in TCM hospitals, analyze the rationality of total hospitalization expenses with TCM medi-cal treatment method, and provide data analysis results for evaluating the advantages and disadvanta-ges of TCM treatment in major illnesses. The study analyzes main causes of unreasonable increase of total hospitalization expenses of stroke inpatients in TCM hospitals, gives control measures of the cost, and provides scientific reference for health administration departments in making specifications of stroke diagnosis and treatment and standards of hospitalization expenses. Meanwhile, the study offers references for the TCM hospitals administrators in investigating and analyzing the factors which affect the hospitalization cost of stroke inpatients, helps TCM hospitals take proper measures to re-duce the hospitalization cost in treating various illnesses, and affords basis for strengthening scientif-ic management of single-disease hospitalization cost.Methods1. We combined quantitative method and expert interview, collecting and studying hospitaliza-tion expense data, hospitalization records' first pages of all the stroke inpatients, and 18,463 valid medical records in 100 TCM hospitals in 2008. We used comparative analysis and multi-factor a-nalysis on the quantitative data. Meanwhile, we gathered, concluded, sorted interviewed informa-tion from experts and made subject-summarized analysis. All the data was put into a database of excel, and analyzed through SPSS12.0.2. We used normal test on the comparison of the average number of total hospitalization cost with medical treatment methods of TCM, combination of TCM and Western medicine and Western medicine, and the average number total hospitalization cost of patients with different locations, hos-pitals at various levels, different occupations, different hospitalization circumstances, different states of leaving hospitals, different payment ways and various hospitalization days. We performed a Chi-Square test to compare the difference of the three medical treatment methods in location, hos-pital levels, sex, age, situation of hospitalization, discharge way, hospitalization days, illness situ-ation, proportion of cure and improvement cases, clinical outcome situation. We took multiple linear regression analysis in analyzing the influence factors of hospitalization cost of the three medical treat-ment methods. Results1. In terms of total cost of inpatients, the hospitalization cost of patients with TCM treatment is higher than others, the second is cost with combination of TCM and Western medicine treatment, and the cost of inpatients with Western medicine treatment, is the lowest. Through testing, the differences of the hospitalization expenses with the three medical treatment methods have statistical significance (P<0.01)2. In terms of average hospitalization time, inpatients with treatment of TCM stay in hospitals longer than patients being treated with the combination of TCM and Western medicine and Western medicine, which rank respectively the second the third. According to the test, the differences of hospitalization days have shown statistical significance (P<0.01)3. The composition of hospitalization situation; The ratio of inpatients with TCM treatment methods is higher than those with the other two methods in Eastern China, province-level hospi-tals, and among those who are in dangerous situation as they come to the hospitals and are in criti-cal, emergency and difficult situations during the hospitalizing period. The distribution difference of basic situation for the inpatients with the three methods is not evident.4. Among all the influence factors, we found 9 ones including hospitalization days, ages, hos-pital levels, locations, occupations, payment patterns, discharging circumstances, hospitalizing sit-uation and sex. And the hospitalization days affect the cost more than other factors which sort differ-ent according to different medical treatment methods.Conclusions1. Through expert interview and data analysis, we know the 7 reasons for high cost of inpatients with TCM treatment methods. They are locations, hospital levels, hospitalization situation and days, illness conditions in hospitals, coexisting disease, and medicine fees.2. TCM treatment methods boast certain advantages in fighting against heavy and difficult dis-eases.
