Maimendong Decoction is a famous classic recipe recorded in the Golden Chamber written by Zhang Zhongjing of the Han Dynasty. It is used to treat the syndrome characterized by consumption of fluid in the stomach and flaming of fire in a deficiency condition. It consists of six ingredients—Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis), Ginseng, Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Dazao (Frutus Jujubai), Rice and Zhibanxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparata). The first five ingredients act to tonify the middle energizer, and generate fluid, while the last one works to ease the throat and bring qi downward as it is pungent in flavor and warm in property, which is especially effective for chronic diseases with the lung involved. In recent years its indications are far beyond its original ones and it is widely clinically used in the treatment of cough, respiratory, digestive disorders and gynecological, pediatric and ENT diseases, among which it is especially effective for respiratory diseases and cough due to various causes.Through searching of 73 articles in journals published in the past 30 years the results have been analyzed and summarized. In the part of ancient literature study, focus is laid on the exposition of the Golden Chamber to find out the formula's structure and characteristics of ingredient combination. In the part of present-day literature study its curative effect on respiratory, digestive gynecological and pediatric diseases is observed and its mechanism is explored in terms of pharmacology and ingredient combination, which is the basis of its chief indications and dosage given in modern times. Meanwhile, the graduation thesis discusses its application to different diseases which share the common pathogenesis. That is to say that the decoction is effective for different symptoms with same pathogenesis. The thesis ends with its clinical significance in study of the decoction, which plays a guiding role in the treatment of either acute or chronic diseases. But it is a pity that there are not enough laboratory researches and clinical experimental design.
