Objective:To investigate the correlation between high risk human papillomavirus 16 (HPV16) E6 and human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) in breast cancer and normal breast tissues and to explore the mechanisms in the carcinogenesis and progression of breast cancer. Methods:We employed SP immunohistochemistry to detect the expression of HPV16 E6 and hTERT in 40 cases of breast cancer and 20 normal breast tissues. Results:The expression of high risk HPV16 E6 and hTERT in 40 cases of breast cancer were 55%,57.5%,and they were higher than those in normal breast tissues (the expression of high risk HPV16 E6 and hTERT in normal breast tissues were 10.0%,5.0%). The expression of HPV16 E6 was positively correlated with the expression of hTERT(r=0.341,p<0.05)Conclusions:HPV16 may be pathogenic factor of breast carcinoma. Mechanism was as follows:HPV16 E6 induced the activation of hTERT by an unknown route. This might promote the generation of breast cancer.
