The urban circle is the necessary stage and the more advanced form of city development. The urban circles in the middle region of China can support the rising of central China strategy on the space. The essence of the urban circle is the external economy such as the agglomeration economy and the scale economy come out with the urban agglomeration. These economy benefits are acquired by the industry coordination, spatial concentration and diffusion, and the cooperation of different urban functions. So it is meaningful to study the industries, the spatial, the economy connection and the urban functions of Wuhan urban circle, both in theoretical and in practice, which can supply policies for the coordinated development of urban circles. This paper studies the current situation, the problems and makes suggestions for the coordinated development of Wuhan urban circle. It contains five aspects:(ⅰ)the economy structure, the industry cooperation and the economy coordination mechanism;(ⅱ)the spatial structure, the urban system and the spatial coordination mechanism;(ⅲ)the economic space connection in and out of the Wuhan urban circle and its connection mechanism;(ⅳ)the institutions and mechanisms of the coordinated development of Wuhan urban circle;(ⅴ)the development strategy based on the SWOT analysis. There are eight parts of this paper. The first chapter is the background, the meaning, the method, the creation and the deficiency of the paper. The second chapter is the theoretical background and the literature review related. The third chapter is about the development conditions of Wuhan urban circle. The fourth chapter analyzes the economic structure and the income gap by the concentration index; analyzes the specialization of the 9 cities by the industries specialization index (LQ) and the Webb index. The fifth chapter studies the outer and inner spatial structure and the city system of Wuhan urban cycle; studies the hierarchical size by the fractal analysis; analyze the centrality, the space expansion and the land replacement of Wuhan urban circle by empirical study. The sixth chapter analyzes the basic factors composing the common market for Wuhan urban circle; studies the spatial connection between it and the central city of other provinces, between it and the other urban circles of China, and the spatial connection between its inner 9 cities; uses the DEA model to study the input and output of economy and the efficiency of the economic connection. The seventh chapter uses the SWOT method to analyze the strength, the weakness, the opportunity and the challenge of Wuhan urban circle, and come out with the strategy for its development. The eighth chapter summarizes the main research findings and results, and has some policy suggestions for the coordinated development of Wuhan urban circle. Some new ideas in this paper: firstly, use the spatial connection model to quantitatively measure the relations between different cities and can help to determine the cities'functions; secondly, propose the direction of development of the industries and the idea of using land source smartly in Wuhan urban circle, which at some extent are meaningful for its construction of sustainable society. The main conclusions are: firstly, Wuhan urban circle should complete its urban system, strengthen the construction of the mega-city and the medium-sized cities, and build Huangshi city as the vice center for Wuhan urban circle; secondly, in order to solve the assimilation of the industrial structure, the 9 cities should develop its industries by specialization ,agglomeration and develop its characteristic industries;thirdly,Wuhan urban circle should improve its urbanization level as an important way to save its land source, and supply the space for the future agglomeration of the human resources and economy activities.
