After China joined the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001, its political policies and economic system underwent deep reform, foreign companies entering the Chinese market quickly multiplied, and domestic logistics companies experienced great pressure to improve. These companies had to learn how to survive and become more competitive in such a turbulent environment, which presented them with the opportunity to broaden their horizons as they were introduced to the global perspective, and the challenge improve according to the international higher industry standards.This thesis details problems logistics companies might encounter during operations in practice, and provides possible solutions based on the author's experience as well as specific observations of typical logistics companies.Chapter One features an introduction which contains the definition of logistics, the key factors and trends of modern logistics, and differentiates logistics-related concepts. The chapter also covers why Chinese companies need to implement modern logistics, and the key factors to success in this area.Chapter Two includes an analysis of the current situation of the Chinese logistics market, and gaps between Chinese logistics companies and successful international logistics service providers. It also discusses the positive aspects of the environment for the development of logistics in China.Chapter Three contains a demonstration of the company the author worked for—a distributor for a large supermarket—as an example to discuss the operating problems that many logistics companies face in China.In Chapter Four, the author offers solutions pertaining to: improving infrastructure construction, implementing standardized operations, applying and advancing information systems, introducing mathematics methods, and training staff to be qualified and professional in order to progress to a higher standard.
