User-defined workflow, a new research orientation, expanding from workflow, aims at supporting and managing business process by using lots of new methods, techniques and mind to design, execute, control and analyze practical operational processes involving humans, organizations, business objects and other sources of information, etc. It centers on enterprise processes and activities and remarkably elevates BPM to a level higher than others. In order to let the management to constitute multifarious processes based on requirement, the system only supplies environment of design, performance and main elements, making the process definition alone, not combining to special operation. So it will make the enterprise be capable of using recombined process and enhance its competitive ability.Recently, process automation and workflow techniques are noticeably. Reviewing the enterprise application system's history of development, database management system's appearance makes the enterprise application separate from data management, a graphical interface technology and the development of browser technology makes enterprise application and the user interface to achieve separation, and workflow management system's emergence makes the enterprise application separate from business logic rules which will greatly enhance application's flexibility and promote enterprise application from the business-oriented features to the process-oriented business processing.Based on the state of current workflow's development and application, this dissertation reviews the workflow's related definition and functional frame. Then it focuses on workflow theory architecture, user-defined workflow's related techniques, modeling methods and so on.Firstly, the theoretical principles of workflow concerning development, application and so on are discussed which highlight the importance and deficiency of workflow in enterprise information so as to demonstrate the significance of this study and direction.Secondly, the basic principles of the workflow are studied in order to have a more clear understanding of the workflow and the existing classification to determine the object of this study and classification. The model of the workflow which is given by the WFMC is researched especially in function and structure.Thirdly, the overview of the user-defined workflow is elaborated, focusing on the user-defined workflow features, highlighting its comparative advantage comparing with the traditional flow. Taking the features of the system into account, the application platform and technologies are illustrated.Then, an in-depth study on the enablement of workflow is done from three aspects: localization, framework and modular design. On the level of localization the system describes the pure text of the process. As to the framework, this dissertation put forward a highly efficient and intelligent workflow framework according to the characteristics of the workflow management system and the structure compact modules. And then the module design highlights the user-defined peculiarity.Finally, the paper summarizes its innovations and shortages and then looks forward to the future studies.
