Shanghai Port Container Transport Development Strategy

The first big port in China mainland - Shanghai Port is playing an important role in China and Shanghai economic development. The factors such as economic globalization, China's accession to WTO, the implementation of western development strategy, the new turn promotion of the Yangtze valley industry as well as the construction of Shanghai international shipping center will bring opportunities to Shanghai Port's container transportation. Meanwhile, it also has been threatened by the factors as the competition for the international hub between the ports in Northeast Asia, the struggle for the hinterland between the neighboring ports, the publishing of international hub construction plans between the coastal ports, etc. By the end of 2005, the open of Yangshan deepwater Port enable Shanghai Port get rid of the difficulty about having no deepwater port. Shanghai becomes the focus again to the world port industry.Compared with international container hub such as Hong Kong, Singapore, Rotterdam and so on, Shanghai has its own advantages as well as certain disparities. By using the business strategy theory and its research approach, this paper analyzes the external environment and internal condition that has been faced by the development of Shanghai container transportation, and also proposes development strategy to it.Both qualitative and quantitative methods have been used to study Shanghai Port's container transportation development strategy. First, the text reviews the business strategy theory. Second, according to the history and current situation of container transportation of Shanghai Port, the test predicts the container throughput of Shanghai Port in the future by using quantitative method, and explains the trend of Shanghai Port's container transportation. Moreover, basing on the situation of container transportation and SWOT analysis model, the text analyzes the external environment and internal conditions for the future development.
