Urban modernization in occidental capitalistic countries starts from industrialization, while urban modernization begins from commercialization in China. Due to the invasion by western powers, China was forced to open up, following the southeast coastal area, the Yangtze River waters became a relatively early inland water district opening-up to the outside world. As a medium-sized port city for commerce in the Yangtze River waters, Jiujiang has its geographical advantage and historical bases.Ever since the openning-up of modern Jiujiang, with its own advantages, the city has engaged in domestic and foreign trade actively, consciously or unconsciously done self-adjustment, which pushed forward the process of urban modernization. The article takes the city on the Jiujiang port as a basis, and does a all-around research on the background and types of its openning-up , the evolution of its import and export, the balance of the custom duty, the establishment of modern enterprises, the urban economic and political structure, the metropolitan construction as well as the perception of the citizens. With the trade development on the Jiujiang port, the geographical advantages of the Jiujiang port was fully utilized, the window leading to the world also openned on one hand, on the other hand, the isolated situation of Jiujiang was also broken, which enhanced the communication and contact with the world and gradually got rid of the limitation posed by the mechanism of the traditional Chinese feudal rule, leading to the change of the urban structure and function and pushing forward the emerge and development of the city's urban modernization. Due to the special era it existed, the development of its urban modernization was slow and abnormal. From the developing process of the trade and its impact on the urban modernization, the process could be considered as a blow and baptise to the old city. Today the construction and development of the city is an extention of the past development.
