Along with the continuous deepening of researching, the expression method of geographic information is extending from 2D to 3D. Terrain is a kind of very important natural scene, which has features of complex & diversiform characteristics and huge data quantity. The using of terrain is in the important position in application. Fidelity and real-time expression of terrain has great significance on exact spatial cognition. The research results of some subjects such as computer graphics, topography and mathematics provide tools to solve the questions on this field. With the developing of GIS and computer technology,2D GIS is mature developed, 3D GIS becomes current research focus. It can treat with massive data by achieve GIS 3D visualization by scene graph. It can decreasing memory burden, increasing data throughput and realize fast rendering because of its data organization, data storage and data rendering is carry out by image lager mode. Realized 3D visualization effect based on scene graph by using OpenGL tooling combined with visualization technology. This thesis mainly discussed 3D visualization technology based on the GIS terrain from scene graph, described 3D scenery modeling by scene organization technology. Selected the structure of scene graph would be used; the storage of data and scene is organized by scene graph mode; then, modeling for the scene; last, by using the developing environment of C++ and combined with OpenGL graphics developing interface, designed and implemented a 3D visualization system based on the terrain of scene graph, and realized 3D roaming. And, described the design and implement process of the 3D visualization system by using 3D visualization technology. Finally, provided effect drawing and result analysis.
