WDM-PON is one of the most potential broadband access networks, but the only way for WDM-PON to get away from the disadvantageous situation of unsuccessful commercialization is to reduce its costs. It is an effective method to reduce the cost with low-cost elements, simplified topological structure and colorless design.The relationship between the structure and the cost of WDM-PON was analyzed, and finally the research target was focused on the WDM-PON with topological structure of double-star and with paths distributed scheme of bidirectional transmission on one wavelength in single fiber.The most possible technology to greatly reduce the costs of WDM-PON is colorless technology. Technologies of colorless schemes were induced and analyzed intrinsically, and costs of the technologies were discussed at the same time. And then, colorless light sources and modulation technologies, which had influence on the effect of colorless, were researched. Benefits of systematic performance led by low cost colorless light sources and modulation technologies were analyzed.The theory that the coherent property of the output of injection-locked FP-LD is determined by the injected light was proposed in this paper, and the theoretical vacancy of the original injection-locked theory about injection-locked by incoherent light was filled. The theory was proved through injection-locked experiments with injected lights of different linewidth.Colorless schemes base on FP-LD are of the lowest cost among all the colorless schemes. The colorless scheme of data-erased based on FP-LD is most advantageous in costs, and on the scheme a new theoretical explaination was proposed, which is colorless by data-erased based on nonlinear effects in injected FP-LD. The explaination was proved to be correct by colorless experiments. Excellently data-erased to injected light was achieved at the extinct ratio even great than 10 dB, much great than that of 3 ~ 4 dB reported previously. The new explaination is of great significance to the colorless technologies based on FP-LD.
